science. You must stay enrolled at your own university throughout — this is a
placement attached to a degree, not a graduate post.

Be realistic about Swiss costs
Switzerland is among the most expensive countries in the world. A living
allowance that would be generous in most of Europe goes quickly in Zurich or
Lausanne.
Ask for the figure at offer stage and check it against real rents and grocery
prices rather than assuming. This is not a reason to decline — the placements
are excellent — but going in with the wrong number is avoidable.
What selection reads for
Research groups take students who can contribute early:
- Specific coursework that maps onto the group's work. Name the group.
- Hands-on experience — laboratory, computational, instrumentation.
- Programming, particularly Python, C++ or MATLAB, for anything computational.
- A referee who supervised you on real work, rather than only taught you.
A generic “I am fascinated by physics” letter loses to a paragraph naming a
technique you have used.
